So I compared the Nike and Detroit marathons to others we have done, Umstead, Bayshore and New York. I threw in Boston which we will be doing next year. I got these from MapMyRun.com, and carefully put them at the same scale (1 pixel for every 5 feet)
I thought I would post this for others who like to obsess. Enjoy.
Comparing the elevation profiles of:
- The Umstead Marathon (in Raleigh, NC)
- The Nike Women's Marathon (in San Francisco)
- The Detroit Marathon (Had to add in the tunnel and bridge)
- The Bayshore Marathon (in Traverse City, MI)
- The New York Marathon (Might not have the bridges)
- The Boston Marathon
- Grandfather Mountain Marathon (Boone, NC)

Awesome! Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou gotta get a Grandfather Mtn in there.
ReplyDeletegreat idea! done.
ReplyDeleteAh, there's pappy. It makes the elevation compilation look like a colorful mountain landscape.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff. Can you add in the City of Oaks profile for comparison. People complain about the hills in that one all the time and I don't think it is all that bad.
ReplyDeletewow.... nice to have this! I can tell you Chicago is even flatter than the Bayshore marathon!
ReplyDeleteHow did it go?
ReplyDeleteI believe City of Oaks is not as hilly as many of the others but it is a bit dual personality. You trot around downtown for the first 10 miles enjoying the flat scenery and then there is that long paved incline toward Umstead. Then it is fairly gradual hills. But it is a tale of two marathons really.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of terrain, ac. You mentioned that the Umstead single track was a bit more challenging than the terrain at Triple Lakes. Do you have a suggestion locally for trails that are similar to those of Triple Lakes?
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeletehmmm. It has been years since I have been up there, but Falls Lake has a lot of trails. I seem to remember those being fairly easy on the feet. You may want to try there if you are training for the 40.
The trail around lake crabtree is similar to triple lakes. though in the summer there are sections with tall grass, and ticks become an issue.
The trail around Lake Crabtree is similar.
ReplyDeleteThough I avoid it in the summer because there are sections of tall grass infested with ticks.
I have not been up at Falls Lake in years, but there are many miles of trails up there too
